George Clooney in Nuba Mountains of Sudan...

VIDEO IS GRAPHIC

This is a short piece on the work that George Clooney has been doing in Sudan. It's a look into the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, the attmept at ethnic cleansing that is going on there, and a battle that George Clooney has taken up in front of our own United States government, asking for help and spread of awareness. However short the stint, both George and his father were arrested over the last 24 hours for passing police lines in a protest in Washington. As with the Kony post I have below, the cause is none less imminent, and none less media worthy. Two different approaches. Both worth a look and a listen.

KONY 2012 and the debates its caused...

KONY 2012 from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.

Above is the now worldwide famous video on the situation in Uganda involving the alleged horrific kidnapping, forced militarism, and sex slave practices of Joseph Kony towards children in the country.

This one video, has not only sent off a wave of support big enough to part seas, but it's also stirred up some major controversy. Invisible Children, the non-profit that backs this cause and the nearly half-hour long video, has come under fire and has people doing everything from creating and posting videos against their movement, to spectators pulling up their financial statements online to track where their funding is going. Which is all cool to me, as reactions are warranted for everything...but I wonder if it takes away more than it is reaching out.

I am not well-versed in all that is Kony, nor all that is Invisible Children. First to admit it. But as I slyly snuck into the Tribe debates going back and forth about this issue, I think this campaign is ingenius. Not since the Obama campaign has social media rapid fired a figure into the stratosphere. I am still trying to wrap my head around the idea of: 'Make Him Famous'. That, in and of itself, is one of the dopest things I have ever heard of, in the effect of getting all eyes on a criminal that millions (including myself) knew nothing about as early as last week. I can't, and won't, knock that type of innovation in thought. Call me an idealist if you will, but I also believe that if even just 30% of what they raise is going towards the actual issue and groupd work, then that's a huge difference there.

I prefer to research my own local organizations and inject my funds into a place in which works on the ground. But...I can't knock those that are grinding like Invisible Children.

born into brothels...growing into a dream

The last time I watched the documentary "Born Into Brothels" it was just before visiting India. I knew my photography would flourish there, and the story of these kids, finding an escape and expression through the same art form, held so tightly to my heart. Proud owner of the film, again, I found myself moved to tears watching it.

Having had been to a number of second and third world countries, but India specifically, gutted me. India, by far, was the worst poverty I'd ever seen, and smelled, in my life. Naked bodies, open masturbation from men on the streets, lack of personal space, being followed, street animals ranging from elephants, to buffalo, and monkeys. It was unlike any place I'd ever been to before, and been to since. Yet, one boy from the film reminds of a boy I met in Cambodia.

This is Avijit, ten years post the film's debut. He's 20 now and of all the children in the film, he stook out to me the most. The capacity of which he had to describe photos, and the level of his skills was impressive in the film, especially that being the first time he'd ever picked up a camera. Avijit has a father addicted to hash, and a mother who was set on fire by her pimp, during shooting. A true representation of everything wrong with the Red Light Districts of India. In the film he talked about wanting to go to college in the US, and wanting to be a photographer. Every odd on the face of the Earth was up against this kid...until the film director pulled every loop hole imaginable to get him a passport to attend a World Press Photography event in Amsterdam, and he was exposed to the world outside of India. Ten years later, he's now a student at NYU. Seriously, tears form writing this because of another young man, who reminds me of Avijit, yet lives in Cambodia.

I wrote on here once before about Vantaa, almost a year ago. The photo above is the first, and only time Vantaa and I ever met. I was on my trek through the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia, and after exiting Ta Prohm, I gave my driver lunch on me. While there this young man approached my table, and spoke stunning English. He asked if I was from South Africa, because of my dress. He also tried to navigate the circle of kids surrounding me, apparently because they'd never seen anyone with my style and feather earring. I was impressed with Vantaa. He spoke about meeting Angelina Jolie when they shot Tomb Raider in Ta Prohm. We spoke about his education. He was to be a few years outside of high school, and wanting nothing more than to get an education in the United States. He spoke so vividly about wanting to attend University, and how important it was to him, yet he doubted it would happen because of how poor his family was. I gave Vantaa my card, which he is holding in the photo ironically, and told him to please keep in contact with me, and use my blog as a way to study English.

About a month after my trip to Cambodia, he did just that. We keep in contact periodically over the internet. He's also gotten some free shwag sent his way. Vantaa knows I care. He doesn't know how much I care.

The type of success I want, is defined by me being able to pay for Vantaa's college tuition to attend school in America. That is the type of success I aim for in life, and travel.

People travel for different reasons, and approach it in different ways. I connect with local people when I go abroad, and I form relationships that I still cultivate after I leave. It's more so the people, than it is the places I go to. I want to see how they live and how they love. Giving back is such a huge part of what I want to do. Philanthropy is going to be a word synonymous with Evita. I have seen too much, not to give back.

Thoughts of Avijit and Vantaa today...

DRT•BGs in Domo Arigato Festival this Saturday...Bronx, NYC

Happening just a little faster that I expected, the Univere answered another call, and this is to get my DRT•BGs moving in the community, along with the story of Nomad•ness travel series. I always envisioned me talking to people in my neighborhood and making them aware of the movement...well it starts up Saturday at the Domo Arigato Festival.

This festival is a Japan Relief fundraiser! As we know, I lived in Niigata, Japan for a year and it is a place I hold near and dear to my heart. I miss it dearly. With that said, having the opportunity to not only promote my experience there, but also raise funds for their benefit, I'm there. No questions asked.

In lieu of it being festival number ICHI ('1' in Japanese), I'm running a sale on the bags. If you come to the festival,

ALL CANVAS BAGS ARE $15. ALL BOOKBAGS are $30.

So it's definitely worth it to come out and support the movement! Keep me company! Let's talk Japan, and New York, and life!

I can't wait to see you all there. There will be performers, including previous Nomad•ness Gal: Trezure Empire.  Come Support and get your bag!

So, personal friends or family, as well as readers who have been in the mix for awhile know that of all the places I've traveled to, Paris holds my heart. It's where I want to start spliting my years, by 2013. 6 months living in New York, and then 6 months living in Paris, every year. Sounds like heaven to me.

Keeping consistent with things, and places that inspire my travels, we have the first DRT•BG Book Bag. My babies. These are what I've been waiting for. Fellas, I love you and had to make sure there was something in the mix that you guys could rock. Six colors include Blues, Night, Bubblegum, Berry, Cream, and Kryptonite.

$35 each and EVERY SINGLE PENNY of this first batch sold goes to funding Berlin. We leave in 5 days! Please help out with a purchase and by spreading the word far and wide!!!!! It's a movement!

my friend's house burnt down...pay it forward

Sometimes life hits people with real shit. I don't know how else to say it. This weekend isn't about promoting bags, or even blasting Berlin right now because I got a phone call that shook me to the core less than a week ago.

Many of you will remember Jeremiah from my time in Thailand, with Jet Set Zero towards the end of 2010. Close to my heart, I shared everything from food, to Thailand, to a bed with this young man. The trailer of our season is posted below to jog some memories. He's the one laying on the tiger.

Season 8 - Thailand (Teaser) from Jet Set Zero on Vimeo.

Jeremiah called me on Saturday night, while I was leaving Rudi's memorial BBQ in CT, to notify me that his house had burned to the ground earlier that afternoon, destroying everything his family had and killing his two dogs.

Sadly, I can say I know about this first hand as the same thing happened to me but as a very young child. I couldn't imagine it as an adult.

Jeremiah has tough pride. He tried to go without eating for days in Thailand, while I did everything but shove food down his throat, because of lack of money. The kid hates asking for help....so I'm going to for him.

I waited to post this today because Friday tends to be the universal pay day. If you can PLEASE Pay Pal/Donate anything over to him and his family it'd be greatly appreciated. ANYTHING! I'm working on getting an address where things like clothes can be sent. I'll keep you all posted.

I need you all to send this information far and wide!

The Pay Pal email address that will get right to them is: ortnerjeremiah@yahoo.com

Send whatever amount you can there as soon as possible!

Thank you all so much. Note, this will be the story/blog I push the most this weekend because of the urgency. Below is a posted local newspaper article, with photos of the damage. This family is going through it right now. Please help!

NEWSPAPER STORY LINK

PS. Talking to Jeremiah, after the emotion of losing his dogs, the second thing he brings up is his passport. One of the reasons I love this kid. Travelers understand that. Love you Jeremiah!

Nomad•ness Gal: Dash Harris

With the push of the DRT.BGs and promotions for Berlin, Nomadnesstv.com word is spreading everywhere. So much so, it caught the attention of another female world traveler, Dash Harris, creator of the phenomenal women's website venusgenus.com.

We linked yesterday, filmed a dope bit for the promotion of Nomad•ness TV, to be featured on her site, and talked for over two hours.

One of those people who you just meet but you feel as though you've known them for years already. We spoke about similar travels in Europe, being noted by foreigners as the only Black woman they've seen travel alone, ever. We're a rare breed....for now. Nomadness is working on that.

Dash has Panamanian, and subsequently, African roots. Dash put her 2 week notice in to her most recent job and is ditching the work force to pursue her passion. My kinda woman!

She just started a 45 day Kickstarter to help get her documentary, Negro, funded at $5250! The documentary takes an innovative look at the African Diaspora and its influences on Latin cultures. Dash found something that is personal, in some areas of the world controversial, but definitely poignant and is on her way to telling the story in her own way. I dig it!

If you can pledge, please do to her project of Kickstarter.

Link to her Kickstarter is HERE!

help a friend, help a friend...

Davida has been pushing for donations on her Breast Cancer Walk. She's been chosen as a representative from her office for this year's Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk For A Cure Breat Cancer Fundraiser. She has 15 weeks to raise $2500, and I believe as of last night she went over the $1000 mark!

Let's help her surpass her goal! Davida is not just walking on behalf of strangers with the disease, but also on behalf of those she knows who don't have it. It's a community thing.

"I am walking for all of the women that I personally know that have been affected by this disease, I am walking because i cant imagine my life without Elsie Blankson, Mika Culbreath, Kate Blankson or little miss Gabrielle Ashley, so Lord forbid any of these ladies are ever diagnosed with this awful disease,  I would like to think I at least TRIED to find a cure!!"

Please help if you can and DONATE HERE~!

Black Weblog Awards 2011: We're a Nominee...really?!

At midnight, last night, it officially marked the 1 Week left point in the fundraiser. Today has been absolutely phenomenal as far as pledges. It's around 3pm EST and we're already 8 pledges in, including a pledge increase, by a current Backer. If any of you are interested, I invite you to increase your pledge amount through this last week.

Being that this is such a monumental point in the fundraiser, I felt it would also be a good time for a positive announcement.

I made a promise to you all, at the bottom of my Project Outline, that I'd do everything in my power to make sure that this project happens, both on and offline. It is a promise I have since kept, and one I don't think I realized I kept to the capacity I did.

Last night, while at work, the Form Submission email went off that links directly to my website. Assuming it was someone inquiring about a DRT•BG, I opened the email to find out that.....

Nomadnesstv.com is an Official Nominee for Best Travel Blog by the Black Weblog Awards 2011.

Truth be told, I'd never even heard of this Awards Ceremony, so I definitely didn't try to gather votes around a nomination. People, whoever they are, voted on their own. And voted enough, that without knowing it, got me into the finals.

I have been invited to attend the LIVE taping in Los Angeles the weekend of July 9th. If you know me, you know hell or high water, I am there!

So again, my pledge to you, is that I will keep this project going, until the vision is realized, by any means necessary!

If you would like to vote (open until June 17th) please click the link below, or photo above. My category is on Page 4/5, #28.

BLACK WEBLOG AWARDS 2011 VOTE FOR NOMADNESS TV!

You all, individually, and as you see also collectively have inspired me. The support can induce tears and chills. Thank you!

BERLIN or Bust Fundraiser! Pledger Appreciation Recap!

Me drinking the signature drink of the night, a Nomad•ness Martini! We also had DRT•BG shots! Don't mess with me.

First and foremost, before I get into any type of recap of last night, I need to say thank you to Blue of Blue Entertainment. He is my dear friend and the man behind everything that was last night. A warm thank you to Game Day Bar & Grill. A beautiful venue, on East Tremonet Avenue in the Bronx. Such a gracious host to the event. Alexa, V, Jason, Dennis, Brian Peters, Gyasi who also supports, Rufus, Mom and Joseph, Branded Baron for supplying the T-shirts and new Nomad•ness stickers . Check out his site below! The dude is talented!

YES, there are Nomad•ness T-shirts! $5 during the last week push of the fundraiser! If interested, hit that "DONATE" Tab to the right, and clock in $8 TOTAL. $3 of that will go towards shipping costs! That easy!

Another Thank you to all from Blue's crew that came through! I really appreciate all the love and support!

What we lacked in heads there, we made up for in money. My Pay Pal and Kickstarter were going off all night. Between the DRT•BGs sold, the pledges from last night, and Jason's own pledge, I woke up to a $550 jump in our goal! We are, at this second, 82% funded, and you're CRAZY if you think I'm letting that go! We got this $5000! I just need everyone to please pledge whatever you can and spread the word like wild fire!

I see you guys really like the DRT•BGs! That's awesome. more to come soon! Only 3 left right now! 2 Blue, and 1 Orange. Talking designs for the next bag for sometime next month! Canvas bags will be recurring, but I have emphasis on the next step up right now, so everyone rock with me.

Again, a thank you to supporters, family, and friends. The fellas always have my back!

Love and Gratitude!

why you need a DIRTBAG in your life!?

THE DIRTBAGS ARE HERE!

So I've been throwing you guys little clues here and there...posting some pictures here and there of the process me and my designer, Erica have been going through. Your girl has been losing a lot of sleep lately.

One of the components to my travel empire that I am building, is luggage. I want to not only reinvent (or invent) the face of young travel, but also HOW we travel.

When  you think of backpackers, or budget travelers, we're linked with this negative connotation of being dirty. Now.....we have our days. When you rough it in South East Asia, you gotta do what you gotta do. But I'm still young. I'm still vibrant, and there are a lot of people out there with the same philosophy.

So I'm flipping the connotation.

I present to you, the first, the Genesis, of my travel bag line "The Dirtbag Series"!

This is just the beginning. With time, you will see new renditions, new bag types, and colors. I'm so excited that this is coming to fruition as fast as it is.

So here's the deal, I currently only have 7 of each color right now. This first batch is specifically to raise money to go towards the FUNDRAISER..which only had 19 days left! I need your support! Buy a bag, pledge to the cause, and please spread the word!

Canvas Bags are $20 each, with a flat fee of $5 for shipping costs, if necessary.

I have NEON GREEN, ORANGE, and BLUE! These bags will be sold on a first come first serve basis!

To order this first batch, click the CONTACT tab on the site. Enter the 'DIRTBAG: (color)" in the Subject area, and send me your order details. I'll respond with payment information!

Get 'em!
